you invited me over for a battle royale! you set up all the pieces (on a table next to the train setup in your basement) ... union outnumbering confederates 2x1, rebels sans artillery, yankees occupying the high groud ...

then you dramatically announced that i would be the confederates and you would be the union ... and "let the war commence!"

it was, of course, a slaughter.

just wondering if you ever felt the slightest pang of shame for that rout? stacking the deck as you did.

it clearly had no effect on me ... i can barely recall the encounter :)

worst cup was something i blamed on the restaurant's sour milk.
later i realized it was internal: my meds related "change in taste" souring the milk. yuck. glad to be done with that.

this is a story about the worst cup of coffee i have ever had in my life. it was actually just this morning at work. i walked in as usual and needed a cup desperatly but then to my dismay i saw a young lady named "anonymous" making the coffee. i then knew at this point it would be a bad day, once the coffee was brewed a few of my co worked grabbed a cup and then i finally got mine but it was closer to the bottom. when i poured it and added sugar to stir the grounds already started floating to the surface. after also pickig the grounds out of my teeth i then proceeded to dump the coffee out and make a fresh pot the right way!! .. thanks danielle

my picks were an experiment this year. jay leno was touting this "wunderkind" of a film critic, 13-year-old jackson murphy, who -- judging by his picks -- appears to be more precocious than accurate. if i had gone with my own picks, i would have been 17 of 24. it particularly hurt like hell to go against "hugo" for cinematography, art direcotn and visual effects, and against louisiana's own "fantastic flying books." so much for that experiment. next year's picks will be my own.

regarding the historical significance of "the last time i saw paris" in oscar history, i believe you are referring to the fact that the songs composer, jerome kern, was so upset at winning with a song that had not been specifically written for a motion picture, that he successfully petitioned the motion picture academy to change the rules. since 1941, a nominated song must be written specifically for the motion picture in which it is performed. (also, this was kern's second oscar. he won for "the way you look tonight" in 1936.

so naturally i googled the twin question and got this great answer. jack warner - whadda rotten fella!

twins have won an oscar award only 3x in movie history.

the epstein twins phillip and julius won for co-writing the screenplay of casablanca (1942) with howard koch.

jack warner at warner studios did not like the twins because of their pranks and work hours, so out of spite, he referred them to the houe of un-american committee, which had already sent the hollywood ten to prison for not declaring their political beliefs. they were mostly hollyood screenplay writers.

when asked on a huac questionnaire if the twins had ever been members of a "subversive organization," the twins replied, "yes. warner brothers."

philip died of cancer that year in 1952. he was also the grandfather of boston red sox and chicago cubs curse-breaking world series winning gm theo epstein (birthday today). julius died one day after theo's birthday in 2000.

twins richard and paul sylbert won oscars for 3 different movies, who's afraid of virginia woolf? (1966) and dick tracy, and heaven can wait (1978).

twins wolfgang and christoph lauenstein won an oscar for their short balance (1989).
